How to apply for your driving license online
The Indian law requires all citizens, aged 18 or above, to hold a driver's license issued in their name, to be able to drive anywhere in India. Driving without a license can lead to fines and penalties, among other consequences. However, with the introduction of online services, it's quite easy to apply for a DL nowadays. Here's how you can apply for it online.
How to apply for a learner's license online
First of all, log on to the the online Sarathi portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Next, select your state of residence. Then, click on 'Apply online', and in the drop-down menu, select 'New learners license.' You'll be taken to a new page, wherein you'll have to fill out your personal, residential, and other details.
About uploading documents, slot booking, and fee payment
After filling out all the necessary details, you'll have to upload scanned copies of required documents such as a proof of age, proof of residence etc. Next, you need to upload copies of your photograph and signature. Post that, you'll have to make a slot-booking for your learner's license (LL) test. Finally, pay your fee for LL application. Appear for, and clear the test.
How to apply for your permanent DL online
Notably, once you've been issued a learner's license, you'll have to apply for a permanent driving license after 30 days but before 180 days from the date of issue of LL. To do so, a similar approach to application of LL is to be followed. Firstly, log on to the Sarathi portal, then click on 'Apply online', and select 'New driving license.'
About entering details, booking test slot, and paying fee
Now, you'll be required to enter your Learner's license number and Date of birth to proceed. Next, you have to book a DL test slot as per your convenience. Post that, pay the prescribed fee. As the final step, you'll have to be physically present for the driving license test. Only after you pass the test, will you be issued a DL.
