UP Boards- 20% Class X students fail in Hindi
In 2017, of the 29 lakh students who appeared for the Class X Hindi exams, 5.23 lakh - a whopping 20% - failed. Compared to the 81.28% pass rate for Hindi, 81.46% passed in English. It is surprising to say the least, considering we are talking about India's Hindi heartland. Under the UP Board, anyone who fails in Hindi is detained.
Trends have been similar since about seven years
The trend has remained similar: in 2012, out of 35 lakh examinees, three lakh didn't clear it; only 40% scored above 50. In 2011, 4.5 lakh of 33 lakh students failed. RP Mishra, state secretary, UP Secondary Education Teachers' Association, called this year's results "disturbing".
What do teachers have to say about it?
Several teachers feel students don't pay attention to the a subject as it is their mother tongue and hence they remain confident about it; however, the academic course mandates correct grammar and other rules that are often not followed in daily life. Some others said the dismal result may be a consequence of introduction of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in Class X in 2011.
