Yellow alert issued in Himachal due to rain, snowfall
Heavy snowfall and rain in the mid- and lower hills caused the closure of at least 104 roads and three national highways in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. This includes key routes in Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu, Chamba and Kangra, significantly impacting local transportation and connectivity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning in isolated areas on Monday and Tuesday in various parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Bridge collapse adds to weather woes in Kangra
The severe weather conditions also resulted in infrastructure damage, with a bridge in Kangra being swept away due to the torrential downpour. Local authorities are now preparing to construct a new bridge as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is mobilizing manpower and machinery to remove blockages and restore traffic movement for commuters.
Above-average rainfall predicted for upcoming monsoon season
The IMD also predicted an above-normal rainfall season across the country during the southwest monsoon. Quantitative estimates suggest that rainfall could reach 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA), which is set at 87cm for the period between 1971-2020. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also expected in northeast India until April 24. Similarly, thunderstorms with lightning and severe gusts are expected across Central and South Peninsular India on April 21-22.
