Security intensified in Manipur after fleet of oil trucks ambushed
Security measures have been significantly increased in Manipur following an attack by armed miscreants on a convoy of trucks and oil tankers. The attack occurred on Tuesday around 10:30am along the Imphal-Jiribam Highway (National Highway 37) between Shanti Khunou and Kaimai in the Tamenglong district. Two diesel trucks, a petrol truck and an LPG gas tanker were hit as suspected Kuki militants opened indiscriminate fire on them. The attack also led to one truck driver being injured.
Why does this story matter?
Manipur has been on the boil since May 3, 2023, when violence erupted between the tribal Kukis and the majority Meitei community over the latter's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Since the unrest, the Manipur government has been transporting goods-laden vehicles and oil tankers via the "safer" but little-used NH-37 for the past 10 months.
Manipur government's response
Authorities are currently conducting investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the recent attack. In the aftermath of the attack, state Chief Minister N Biren Singh also convened a meeting with transporters, dealers, distributors, dealer union leaders, and executives from all Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The incident has led to a noticeable increase in residents queuing at petrol stations across the state, primarily due to concerns about a potential halt in work by transporters.
Locals fear attacks will increase as Lok Sabha election nears
The attack shows that rebels and armed groups can strike whenever they want, according to a member of the Meitei Heritage Society (MHS). The worry has been heightened with the general election just around the corner, and the question of free and fair elections arises. Regarding the current security situation, the MHS stated that people in Manipur are going through a very tough period, and it is vital that the poll body ensure a free and fair poll.
Election in Manipur will be held on April 19, 26
The general election in Manipur will be held on April 19 and 26 to elect two members of the 18th Lok Sabha from the constituencies of Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur. The Inner Manipur seat, which has a significant Meitei voter base, is currently held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Ranjan Kumar Rajkumar, a Minister of State in the Narendra Modi government. Lorho S Pfoze of the Naga People's Front (NPF) represents the Outer Manipur constituency.
