14 dead as heavy rain, floods lash Uttar Pradesh
At least 14 people have died in Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding since Saturday. The victims include 10 people who were killed when a three-story house collapsed in the Zakir Nagar area of Meerut following torrential rains. "The death toll stands at 10 while five persons are alive. The rescue operations will continue till the entire debris is removed," District Magistrate Deepak Meena said after the accident in Meerut.
Drowning incidents claim lives amid UP floods
In Gonda, two separate drowning incidents claimed the lives of an 18-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman. The man, Gulam Nabi, drowned while fishing with a friend in Gulharia village. The woman, Aarti, was swept away by the strong currents of the Ghagra river in Lonianpurwa village in Umri Begumganj. In Shahjahanpur's Tilua village, two children drowned while attempting to rescue a goat from a river.
Rivers flow above danger mark
The Ganga, Sharda and Ghaghra rivers are currently flowing above the danger mark in Uttar Pradesh due to heavy rainfall. The state's Relief Commissioner's office reported that the state received 2.2mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours (from Saturday 6pm to Sunday 6 pm). The meteorological department has issued a weather warning for eastern UP, predicting heavy rain at isolated places and thunderstorms accompanied with lightning.
Floods affect localities in Prayagraj
In Prayagraj, rising water levels in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers have led to flooding in many low-lying localities and colonies. Additional DM, Finance and Revenue, Vinay Kumar Singh reported that boats were deployed to evacuate flood-affected people from various villages. He also stated that 1,130 people from 15 localities are currently staying in shelter homes due to the floods.
CM Adityanath announces relief measures for flood victims
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolences for the lives lost due to heavy rain in Uttar Pradesh. He has directed the immediate distribution of a relief amount of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The CM also instructed district magistrates of rain-affected districts to expedite relief work and ensure senior officers monitor the progress.
