Heavy rainfall expected in Bihar, Odisha in coming days
As West Bengal battles heavy rainfall amid a deep depression, the IMD has issued severe weather alert for neighboring states including Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand. The region is expected to witness heavy rainfall in the next 24-48 hours. Alerts have also been issued for the northeastern states, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Marathawada, Telangana, Konkan & Goa, Rayalaseema, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu till October 13.
West Bengal suffers under heavy downpour
Since two days, Kolkata has been lashed by heavy continuous rainfall. About 150 flights have been cancelled, diverted, rescheduled or otherwise affected. In the city, trees were uprooted, waterlogging affected many parts and heavy traffic jam disrupted life. Ferry services were between Kolkata and Hooghly were also suspended. Even train services were affected.
Advisories issued for areas at risk
IMD has asked neighboring states to gear up. "The system (cyclonic) is very likely to move slowly west-northwestwards initially during next 24 hours and move northwards thereafter," a statement said. Fishermen have been asked to stay away from the sea.
