Health department issues warning after viral hepatitis death in Kerala
A 41-year-old man from Chaliyar panchayat, Malappuram district in Kerala, succumbed to viral hepatitis on Friday. This marks the sixth confirmed case of the disease in the district over the past three months. District Medical Officer R Renuka confirmed that the man died while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode. Following this incident, health officials have urged residents to be vigilant against viral hepatitis.
Viral hepatitis cases surge in Malappuram district
Renuka revealed in a press release that Malappuram district has reported 3,184 suspected cases and 1,032 confirmed cases of viral hepatitis since January this year. The district has also witnessed five suspected deaths and five confirmed deaths due to the disease. The highest number of cases was reported in Pothukal, Kuzhimanna, Omanur, Pookotoor, Morayur, Peruvallur panchayats and Malappuram municipality.
Recent viral hepatitis death linked to earlier case
In relation to the recent death in Chaliyar, it was disclosed that a nine-year-old girl from the same household had been diagnosed with viral hepatitis on March 19. Following her diagnosis, health workers visited the house to implement preventive measures. The deceased man was later diagnosed with viral hepatitis at Chaliyar Family Health Centre on April 22 and admitted to Nilambur District Hospital four days later.
