Haryana: Seven killed as 50 vehicles pile up in fog
In a tragic incident, at least seven people were killed and many more were left injured after over 50 vehicles crashed into each other and piled up on a busy flyover in Haryana on Monday morning. The incident took place on the Rohtak-Rewari highway were thick fog in the morning had severely affected visibility, and had obscured drivers' vision. Here's more.
What we know about the vehicle pile-up
With visibility being extremely poor owing to fog, dozens of vehicles, including a school bus, rammed into each other and piled up. As per preliminary reports, six among the seven dead are women. It's not known as of now whether any children got injured or killed. Some reports say that all the dead are from the same family. The injured have been hospitalized.
Another pile-up had taken place on Saturday morning
Just a couple of days back, more than 20 vehicles had rammed each other near Rajpura on National Highway 44, owing to poor visibility. The incident had taken place on a foggy Saturday morning, and eyewitnesses told TOI that two buses and at least 18 vehicles were involved in the pile-up. However, thankfully, all occupants escaped with just minor injuries.
Dense fog isn't going away any time soon
"Cold weather combined with the availability of moisture will result in foggy conditions over northwest India. This dense fog is likely to reduce visibility over Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan, Delhi and UP resulting in difficulty for commuters in the morning and noon hours," says weather forecasting agency Skymet.
