2,300 people watch as man hangs himself live on Facebook
A resident of Pataudi, 28km from Gurugram, hung himself in his house on Monday evening after a fight with his wife, and live-streamed the entire act. The video on Facebook went on for over two hours- from him declaring his intention to preparing the noose to hanging himself, after which it kept running- and 2,300 people watched. Yet, nobody alerted the police or his family.
In two videos, he is seen preparing noose, hanging himself
According to police, 27-year-old Amit Chauhan fought with his wife Preeti on Monday, and she left the house with their two little daughters. He then logged in to Facebook around 7:10pm and posted two videos, urging viewers to share them actively. He is seen tying a dupatta to the fan and then hanging himself. The video kept streaming till Preeti returned around 9:30pm.
Amit was depressed, got aggressive frequently, family says
The police didn't find out about the incident till Tuesday morning, when some neighbors alerted them. The family had already cremated Amit by then. His father Ashok, a farmer, told cops he was having psychological problems and was under treatment at PGIMS Rohtak. He used to get aggressive frequently and was depressed, they said. Amit was unemployed, TOI reports. His brother is with the NSG.
Family hasn't lodged complaint, but cops have started investigations
The family has refused to lodge a complaint, saying no one is responsible for the death. But police have begun an investigation anyway, especially because the family didn't inform them, reports said. No one has been arrested yet.
If you are depressed, keep these things in mind
The most important thing to do is confide in friends. Isolation will make it worse. Spend time doing things you enjoy. Inactivity is likely to boost negative thoughts. Take proper care of your physical health. Have adequate sleep and eat good food. Practise relaxation techniques. Get lots of exercise. Also make sure you expose yourself to sunlight. Lastly, get professional help.
Depression doesn't care about your money or reputation
Depression is becoming a major killer. In July, a retired additional district judge in Ghaziabad and a software engineer in Cyberabad killed themselves. Both were depressed. Fame and riches can't protect you either. Venkannagari Radhika Reddy, a newsreader of popular Telugu channel V6, jumped from her residence roof in Hyderabad in April. Recently, iconic fashion designer Kate Spade and Emmy award-winning CNN host Anthony Bourdain committed suicide.
