Gurugram biker death: Accused was previously fined for wrong-side driving
Kuldeep Kumar Thakur, the accused in a fatal SUV-bike collision that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man in Gurugram, is reportedly a repeat offender. According to India Today, he was previously fined by the Haryana Police for driving on the wrong side and parking on August 24. The 23-year-old victim, Akshat Garg, was killed on Sunday when the accused's black SUV traveling on the wrong side collided with Garg's motorcycle on Golf Course Road in DLF Phase II.
Accused's history of traffic violations and arrest details
Thakur was arrested following the incident but has since been granted bail. Upon arrest, Thakur failed to present his driving license and allegedly sought help from an acquaintance to obtain a backdated one. An aide told India Today that Thakur contacted him on September 17 for this purpose, adding that he also received a call from him seeking legal assistance on the day of the accident.
Accident details and legal proceedings against accused
The Gurugram Police has registered an FIR against Thakur under multiple sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. These include Section 106 (causing death by negligence), Section 281 (rash driving), Section 324(4) (mischief causing damage exceeding ₹20,000), and Section 166 (compensation after a motor vehicle accident) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Senior police officer Vikas Kaushik stated that stringent sections would be added against Thakur in this case due to his failure to produce a valid driving license.
Police consider re-arresting accused, investigation continues
"The accused has not been able to produce his driving licence yet, so we are assuming that he does not have one," Kaushik said. He also mentioned the possibility of re-arresting Thakur if necessary. A GoPro camera worn by the victim's biker friend captured footage of the Mahindra 3XO SUV being driven recklessly on the wrong side of the road at high speeds. The SUV also had a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sticker on its bonnet, per reports.
