Gujarat: Minor girl killed in leopard attack in Amreli
A three-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard at a village in Gujarat's Amreli district, a forest official said on Wednesday. The incident took place around 9:30 pm on Tuesday in Hemal village under Jafrabad taluka when the girl and some other children were playing outside their houses. Here are more details.
Leopard left the body and escaped after alarm was raised
"A leopard suddenly pounced upon the girl and dragged her away," Range Forest Officer Jafrabad, GL Vaghela said. "By the time the family members raised an alarm, the girl was killed. The leopard left the body and escaped," the official said. The body was taken to a hospital for post-mortem.
Cages were immediately set up to trap the big cat
"Two cages were immediately set up in the area to trap the big cat," the official said. "We will set up more cages to trap the leopard," he added. In the last five years, leopards attacked 718 people in Gujarat, killing 67 of them, Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava had said in the State Assembly last week.
State has sought Centre's permission to sterilize the leopards
"Most of the attacks were reported from Amreli, Junagadh, Gir-Somnath, and Dahod districts, which accounted for 55 of the total 67 fatalities," he said. As per the 2016 census, there were 1,395 leopards in Gujarat. To control the population of leopards, the state has sought the Centre's permission for sterilizing the animals, the nod for which is awaited, the minister said.
