On Goa beach, girl gang-raped in front of her boyfriend
A woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men in front of her boyfriend in Sernabhatim beach, around 50 km away from Panaji. The incident took place on Thursday. In the latest development, the police have arrested two accused, both tourists from Indore, and are looking out for the third one, who also belongs to the Madhya Pradesh city.
Accused stripped the couple, demanded money, then raped girl
The accused accosted the couple on the beach, police said. "They stripped the couple, clicked their photographs and demanded money," a senior police officer told. The accused then raped the 20-year-old local girl, in front of her 22-year-old boyfriend. She was threatened and blackmailed by the tourists. South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas said the victim was sent for medical examination.
Police arrest two, looking out for third
"We have arrested Sanjiv Dhananjay Pal, 23, and Ram Santosh Bhariya, 19, both from Indore. We have teams on the lookout for the third accused," said Arvind Gawas. An FIR was registered under IPC Sections 376 (rape) and 394 (robbery) on Friday night.
Goa attracts tourists, but is it safe?
A report of 2017 shed light on Goa's crimes. From 62 rape cases in 2016, 70 rape cases were registered in the state in 2017. Another report of 2016 put Goa in the second position (after Delhi) for crime against foreign nationals. Considering, Goa is one of the major tourist attractions of the country, the crimes rates don't paint a good picture.
