Gautam Gambhir fears for his daughters, writes about child rape
Cricketer Gautam Gambhir is worried for his daughters' safety, much like most parents in the country, considering the cases of child rapes reported. In a column for Hindustan Times, Gambhir wrote he and his wife couldn't explain good and bad touch to their daughters. A father of 2 girls, he wrote child rape was a blatant breach of trust, and the thought of it shuddered him.
Gambhir tells why he hasn't spoken about good, bad touch
"Frankly, my wife and I haven't explained good touch, bad touch to our daughters yet. The world of Aazeen, the four-year-old, is right now all about colorful flying fishes, chocolates growing on trees and a pink dressing table for her pink-haired Barbie doll," wrote Gambhir.
Child's rape is done for naked obsession, writes Gambhir
Shedding light on the epidemic that is child rape, Gambhir wrote, "While terrorist kills for political gains, child's rape is done for naked oppression/pleasure/fascination/revenge/ experimenting." Gambhir wrote more than government's rule of giving the death penalty to rapists of kids under age 12, a systematic transplant was required. "A rape is a rape, why treat it in age groups?" he asked.
Gambhir asks hard-hitting questions
"Do we have rape-crisis centres and fast-track courts as suggested by Justice JS Verma Committee in 2013? No. Are there enough women personnel in police-stations? No. How will any government keep out its political interests if accused happens to be one of them?," he wrote.
Not porn ban but counselling will help, says Gambhir
Taking on those who blamed porn for rape incidents in the country, Gambhir wrote it wouldn't help. He added counselling of young boys and men, and changing school books, might help. "Someone needs to explain to growing up men that the opposite sex is not a consumable good and that a healthy, peaceful existence is possible with them," he wrote.
