Gang-rape victim alleges accused set her ablaze, police doesn't agree
One of the accused of a gang-rape case in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly set the victim ablaze, she has claimed. The survivor said the accused acted after she and her family refused to reach a compromise. The incident took place at her home on Saturday night. However, police claimed the victim got burned after her saree caught fire as she was boiling milk.
Accused wanted the victim to settle, she didn't oblige
The woman was raped one and a half month ago by three men. In her complaint, she wrote the accused came to her residence pressurizing the family to reach a compromise. When the victim and her husband refused to budge, one of the accused poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. The victim, whose waist and legs got burned, is out of danger.
Police claim they have husband's statement
However, SP Police (Shamli) Ajay Kumar contradicted her claims. He said the saree caught fire and claimed the husband has given a statement in this regard. Meanwhile, the survivor has alleged laxity on the police's part. She said it has been over a month since she was violated and no arrests were made. Kumar said probe was underway and they would act soon.
In the past, rape victims killed themselves
Notably, in May 2018, a minor who was gang-raped in Meerut set herself on fire after police refused to lodge a complaint. The victim, all about 14 years of age, succumbed to injuries and a probe was initiated. In September, a gang rape survivor of Shahjahanpur committed suicide by alighting herself as police didn't lodge a complaint and asked her to reach a compromise.
