Kashmir: Fresh snowfall reported, cold wave-like conditions return
Fresh snowfall in Kashmir on Saturday brought back cold wave-like conditions in the Valley where the day temperature for the past week was several degrees higher than normal for this time of the year, officials said. Fresh snowfall was reported from most parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the officials added further.
Landslides affect traffic on Jammu-Srinagar Highway
Heavy rainfall also triggered landslides in the Valley. Traffic was affected on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway after landslides in the Banihal area were reported early Saturday morning. Authorities said that rains intensified from around 3 am in the area and restoration work will resume after the rain stops. According to the Meteorological Department, J&K is likely to witness more rain in the next 24 hours.
Snowfall in different parts of the Kashmir Valley
Macchia and Z-Gali areas in Kupwara recorded snow between one foot to 18 inches, while places like Gulmarg, Baramulla, and Sonamarg recorded up to seven inches of snow. Srinagar has been witnessing rainfall since Friday night, followed by sleet and brief snowfall on Saturday.
Weather is expected to improve by Sunday evening
The precipitation brought down the day temperature by several degrees. While the maximum temperature on Friday was 15 degree Celsius, the minimum temperature was 3.8 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature over the past week has been six to seven degrees above normal for this time of the year. The weatherman has forecast improvement in weather from Sunday evening.
