This former MP, 81, has quit politics to pursue PhD
People often say age is just a number, and a former MP in Odisha has justly proved it. Narayan Sahu, 81, who was a legislator from Pallahara for two terms, and was also a former Member of Parliament of Odisha's Deogarh, is pursuing a PhD from Utkal University in the state after closing the chapter of politics, probably forever. Here's his inspiring story.
Sahu lives in hostel, room has bed, table, family pictures
Showing that age is not a barrier for any type of learning, Sahu is living in the college hostel and preparing for a doctorate in Philosophy. Like other hostel residents, the former politician lives in a room with a small bed covered with a mosquito net. His room has a table stacked with books, study material, and is adorned with family photographs.
'When I saw the wrong in politics, I was vexed'
Sahu told media he quit politics to go back to school. He felt that principles were slowly fading away from politics and was disillusioned. "I loved politics in the beginning, but when I saw the wrong in politics, I was vexed. I gave up politics...I decided to rectify myself as a student," he said. He said no rules and regulations were followed in politics.
'It was happiest day of life when I got admission'
In 1963, Sahu graduated in Economics from Ravenshaw University and his passion for education has landed him in the college once again after 46 years. "It was the happiest day of my life when I got admission in the University," he said. He started his post-graduation in the University in 2009, and completed it in 2011. In 2012, he pursued MPhil in Philosophy.
He never makes us feel there's a huge age-gap: Classmate
Sahu has also developed a unique bond with his classmates. He mingles with them easily and shares his experiences. "The way he mingles with us, he never makes us feel that there's a huge age gap," a student said adding that Sahu behaves like a friend and guardian. University officials praise his passion and said Sahu is setting a great example for the students.
