Amid polls, former judges invite Modi, Rahul to public debate

    What's the story

Former judges of the Supreme Court and high court have invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to a public debate in the thick of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The invitation was sent by Madan Lokur, a former Supreme Court judge; AP Shah, former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and N Ram, former Editor of The Hindu.

In their letter, they emphasized that the invitation is non-partisan and aimed at benefiting the nation.

    Debate purpose

Debate aimed at enriching democratic processes

Lokur, Shah, and Ram believe that a public debate would educate citizens and strengthen the democratic process.

"This bears more relevance as we are the world's largest democracy, and the entire world is watching our elections keenly," they stated in their letter.

The letter further highlights that both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress (INC) have raised significant questions during rallies and public speeches.

These questions touch upon fundamental aspects of our constitutional democracy, they said.

    Key issues

Addressing key questions raised by BJP and INC

"The Prime Minister has publicly challenged the Congress on reservations, Article 370 and wealth redistribution. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has questioned the Prime Minister on possible mutilation of the Constitution, Electoral Bond scheme and the government's response to China, and also challenged him to a public debate," they said.

"Both sides have asked each other questions about their respective Manifestos, as well as their stand on the constitutionally protected scheme of social justice," the letter states.

    Lack of responses

Concern over absence of substantial responses

At the same time, the letter expresses concern over the lack of substantial responses from either party to the questions raised.

It emphasizes that in an era marked by digital misinformation and manipulation, it is crucial to ensure citizens are well-informed about all facets of these debates.

"As members of the public, we are concerned that we have heard only allegations and challenges from either side, and not heard any meaningful responses," the letter noted.

    Debate proposal

Call for debate on crucial election topics

In light of these concerns, Lokur, Shah, and Ram have urged Modi and Gandhi to engage in a debate on crucial election topics.

They suggest that the details of the debate, such as the venue, duration, moderators, and format should be mutually agreed upon.

The letter also proposes that if either leader is unable to attend, they may nominate a representative to participate in their stead.
