Kashmir abductions: DGP SP Vaid removed from post
What's the story
Following a spate of abductions by terrorists that saw family members of policemen getting kidnapped, Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid, on Thursday, was removed from his post. The removal came just two days after Additional Director General (ADG), CID, Abdul Gani Mir saw the same fate. Notably, a few more transfers are also expected. Here are the details.

Details about the transfers taking place in Kashmir
Vaid's removal will see Kashmir's current Director General of Prisons, Dilbag Singh, take up the post, at least temporarily. Vaid will be given the role of a State Transport Commissioner. Earlier, B Srinivas was named the ADG of CID. Meanwhile, Arun Chaudhury is expected to be appointed as Director General of Prisons, and S J M Gilani as ADG, Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police.

A bit about the new Kashmir DGP, Dilbag Singh
Dilbag Singh is an IPS officer from the 1987 batch. In March this year, Singh was appointed as the Director General of Prisons, after the infamous escape of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Naved Jhatt, who fled during a routine medical check-up in February. During his pretty short tenure, Singh streamlined several things, and was responsible for the removal of hardcore terrorists from Kashmir jails.

Context: All those kidnapped were freed unharmed
The removals come after a total of 12 policemen and their relatives were kidnapped by terrorists, marking the end of a 30-year-old unwritten code between terrorists and security forces to not target each others' families. However, all 12 were released unharmed after security forces released Asadullah Naikoo, the father of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Riaz Naikoo.
