Fog disrupts flight, train and road traffic in Delhi
Fog in Delhi has disrupted flight operations severely since the last three days. Yesterday, nine flights were cancelled and over 150 affected. Though officials said visibility was better than the previous days, Low Visibility Procedures had to be put in place from 9pm Monday to 12.30pm yesterday. Since Sunday, 500 flights have been affected. The plight of train and road traffic is similar.
Airport authorities take measures to ensure convenience to passengers
To ensure minimum disruption to passengers, airport authorities are taking several steps, including "display of weather information inside terminals, additional help desks at entry gates where information on cancellations and delays will be displayed, and additional seating capacity in the terminal building", an officer said. Airlines will also be asked to deploy additional staff for manning check-in counters and boarding gates during fog.
Railway operations hit too, over 25 trains affected
Fog hit railway operations too as over 25 trains were affected, leaving hundreds stranded at stations. The Railways said extra arrangements had been made, including additional deployment of RPF and GRP personnel to control the swelling crowds.
Checklist for driving during fog
Delhi Police has issued a list of dos and don'ts for residents. Check weather updates before leaving home and schedule trips accordingly Ensure full lighting system is turned on. Drive slow. Use low-beam headlights. Avoid overtaking or changing lanes. Rather than relying on the center line, use the edge of the road as a guide. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
Delhi starts the year with a dip in air quality
On the new year, pollution levels once again went for a toss in the capital as particulate matter levels reached "very poor". Though there are currently three pollution plans, only one, the Graded Response Action Plan, is officially in play.
