UP shocker: Cousin rapes five-month-old infant, she dies later
In a gut-wrenching incident, a baby, who was merely five months old, was raped in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, allegedly by her 25-year-old cousin. The accused took the infant out to play, brutally assaulted her, dumped her, and is now absconding. Police said they are working to nab the accused, identified as one Pappu. The child's body was sent for autopsy.
Victim had come to attend a wedding in Lucknow
The crime happened at the state capital Lucknow. The deceased's family took her to a wedding party on Sunday. Her mother had come from Hardoi. In the night, Pappu took the child with him under the pretext of playing with her. When he didn't return after some time, the victim's family started looking for her. About four hours later, the poor child was traced.
Victim died during treatment, said reports
Later, the victim was found lying close to the venue. She was in a critical condition and was immediately rushed to Vivekanand hospital. The doctors referred her to the trauma center and the infant died during treatment, reports IANS. On the complaint of the victim's father, an FIR has been registered. DCP Shalini (women crime) said efforts are on to nab Pappu.
UP isn't taking measures to protect women and minors
This shocking case brings nothing but bad news for Uttar Pradesh. And data shows that the government isn't doing a fine job at protecting minors or women. Last year, the National Crime Records Bureau released its 2017 figures that said that UP topped the list as far as crimes against women were concerned. 56,011 cases were registered in UP, followed by 31,979 of Maharashtra.
Crime against children saw a 19% rise as well
Further, as compared to 2016, there was a 19% rise in crime against children. In fact, the maximum number of kidnapping cases was also recorded from UP. In 2016, the number of kidnapping cases was recorded at 15,898 and it increased to 19,921 in 2017.
