The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the country's premier engineering institutes and a dream destination for engineering aspirants. IIT-Bombay has consistently been ranked among the top institutes and remains the most sought-after, even among JEE toppers. Over the years, IIT-Bombay has produced some of the most illustrious alumni who have made significant contributions to different fields. Here are five famous IIT-Bombay alumni.
Nandan Nilekani, one of the most famous alumni of IIT-Bombay
Nandan Nilekani, an entrepreneur and bureaucrat, is one of the most famous alumni of IIT-Bombay. He pursued a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the institute. He is one of the founders of Infosys, which was established in 1981. He is currently its Non-Executive Chairman of the leading IT firm. He also served as the Chairman of the UIDAI, the Aadhaar-issuing authority, between 2009-13.
Former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, an alumnus of IIT-Bombay
Four-time Goa CM and former Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar, was also an alumnus of IIT-Bombay. He graduated in metallurgical engineering from the institute in 1978. Notably, the BJP leader was the first-ever IIT alumnus to become an MLA of a state and to also serve as a Chief Minister. He passed away in March this year at 63 after battling a prolonged illness.
ISRO Chairman K Sivan is an IIT-B alumnus too
Kailasavadivoo Sivan is a well-known space scientist from Tamil Nadu and is the current Chairperson of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He is an IIT-Bombay alumnus who earned a doctoral degree in aerospace engineering from the institute in 2006. He is also popularly known as the "Rocket Man" for his extraordinary contribution to the development of cryogenic engines for India's space program.
Sarita Adve is a renowned IIT-Bombay alumna
Sarita Adve is a renowned IIT-Bombay alumna who got her BTech in electrical engineering from the institute in 1987. She is best known for her significant contributions to the fields of memory consistency models for multiprocessors, memory system performance, hardware reliability, and power management among others. Adve is a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the US.
Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, founders of Ola Cabs
Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati, the founders of the leading app-based cab service provider Ola Cabs founded in 2010, are also among the most famous alumni of IIT-Bombay. Aggarwal, the CEO of Ola Cabs, completed a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from the institute. Bhati, the CTO of the company, had pursued BTech and MTech in mechanical engineering from the premier institute.
