Delhi: 16 hours later, Malviya Nagar fire rages on
On Wednesday, the Indian Air Force launched a Mi-17 helicopter attached with a Bambi bucket to curtail a massive fire that has been raging on for the last 16 hours in Delhi's Malviya Nagar. A rubber factory in Malviya Nagar caught fire and it was classified as the 'highest category' blaze. Almost 80 fire engines worked throughout the night to douse the fire.
How the fire started
The accident is supposed to have started when a truck loaded with rubber material parked near the godown in Khirki extension caught fire. Strong winds, plastic and raw material stored in the godown contributed to the fire and it quickly spread. The process to douse fire became troublesome because of the congested lanes. One firefighter was injured in the process.
As fire rages on, AAP legislator warns of other disasters
Such was the intensity of the fire that most of South Delhi's sky was filled with thick black smoke. Speaking about the disaster, AAP legislator Saurabh Bhardwaj said there were many illegal warehouses and factories in the residential areas. He warned if action wasn't taken, many disasters would happen. He claimed to have complained to South Delhi municipal officials but they ignored his pleas.
