Marriages fixed on Facebook bound to fail: Gujarat HC
"Modern marriages fixed on Facebook" are bound to fail, observed the Gujarat HC as it heard a domestic violence case of a young couple. The two had met on Facebook in 2014, fell in love and married in February'15, but issues cropped up soon. The court urged them, in their 20s, to divorce peacefully and "think about future avenues in life." Here's what happened.
Problems cropped up in the marriage two months later
Jaideep Shah of Navsari married Fansi of Rajkot three years ago, but problems cropped up within two months. Both are students. Fansi left her husband's place and filed an FIR against him and her in-laws for dowry, torture and criminal intimidation under the Dowry Prohibition Act. In 2016, her in-laws approached the court to have the charges quashed.
HC quashes case against in-laws, but orders probe against husband
The HC agreed to quash the case against the in-laws, observing the allegations were mainly targeted at the husband. As for the couple, they should "explore the possibility of a settlement and put an end to the marriage with consent," the judge observed. The HC permitted police to continue investigation against the husband based on her complaint.
