ED to probe financial irregularities against RG Kar hospital's ex-principal
The Enforcement Directorate has initiated an investigation into alleged financial misconduct at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case is based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which implicates former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh in its inquiry. The CBI has charged Ghosh with criminal conspiracy, cheating, dishonesty, and violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act related to these financial irregularities.
CBI takes over investigation from Kolkata Police's SIT
The FIR was registered after the CBI took over the investigation from Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT), as directed by the Calcutta High Court. This development follows a separate case of alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College, where a trainee doctor was tragically raped and murdered on August 9. The high court had previously transferred both investigations to the CBI "in the interest of ensuring a comprehensive and unbiased inquiry."
Ghosh accused of illegal activities and corruption
Ghosh has been accused by a complainant named Ali, of several illegal activities including the misuse of unclaimed bodies, unlawful sale of biomedical waste, and approving tenders in exchange for kickbacks from medical suppliers. Ali also alleged that students were coerced into paying between ₹5-8 lakh to pass exams. Despite lodging a complaint with the state vigilance commission in July 2023, no action was taken against Ghosh until now.
