Election Commission team in poll-bound Mizoram today to assess situation
A three-member team of the Election Commission of India will arrive in poll-bound Mizoram today to assess the situation in view of the demand for the ouster of State's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S B Shashank. The team will hold discussions with Chief Secretary Arvind Ray, other senior officials and leaders of civil societies in an effort to resolve the impasse, sources said.
Mizoram CM writes to Modi seeking Shashank's immediate removal
The team, comprising Jharkhand state CEO L Khiangte, Director of Election Commission Nikhil Kumar and Secretary of Election Commission, S B Joshi, is expected to reach Aizawl, the state capital, this afternoon. Mizoram CM, Lal Thanhawla yesterday wrote to PM Narendra Modi seeking immediate removal of Shashank, as "people have lost faith in him", adding it's the only solution to conduct elections smoothly.
Civil societies, student associations protest outside CEO's office
Meanwhile, seeking the CEO's exit, people congregated in large numbers in front of Shashank's office today, following a call by the NGO Coordination Committee, an umbrella organisation of major civil societies and student associations. The sources said that the CEO did not attend office.
