Election results: EC implements three-layer security, 24x7 CCTV for EVMs
The Election Commission of India has implemented a "three-layered security" to combat any form of "rumor-mongering, disinformation, and breach of protocol" during the counting of votes in five states on Thursday. The arrangement has reportedly been made with a special focus on Uttar Pradesh. An official said the three-layer security has been made, comprising central police forces, Provincial Armed Constabulary, and the UP police.
Why does this story matter?
The development comes as several allegations of tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and breach of protocol emerged in Uttar Pradesh in the last two days. Following the allegations, three officials were also removed in Varanasi, Bareilly, and Sonbhadra districts. Meanwhile, EC has appointed Delhi and Bihar chief electoral officers to oversee the affairs in Meerut and Varanasi, respectively.
Measures taken to prevent any protocol breach: Official
EC secretary-general Umesh Sinha said immediate measures have been taken to prevent any breach of protocol. On arrangements in UP, an EC official said, "Video and static cameras have been installed at all the counting centers, and media centers have also been set up there...adequate AROs (assistant returning officers) have been deployed in every assembly constituency for interruption-free counting."
671 counting observers deployed across country: EC
"A total of 671 counting observers, 130 police observers, and 10 special observers will be on ground to ensure smooth counting process across the country," Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan said. "All strong rooms--where polled EVMs are kept--are under three-layered security with inner cordon manned by central armed forces," Bhushan said. "Concerned candidates have been watching the strong room arrangements through 24x7 CCTV coverage."
How will be the counting process held?
Postal ballots received before 8 am on Thursday would be counted. "After each round of counting, tabulation of results in a prescribed format will be done. This will be signed by returning officers and the observer and a copy will be shared with the candidates," Bhushan said. After the announcement of the round-wise results, counting of the next round will be taken up.
UP a high-stake election for BJP
UP is considered to be a high-stake election for BJP as it sends most MPs to parliament. The party's performance is expected to have a bearing on the next general elections slated for 2024. Several exit polls have forecast a clear majority for BJP. As per the ECI website, BJP is leading in 29 seats, while Samajwadi Party is in 16 till 9:25 am.
