DU admissions 2019: Only one transgender candidate has applied
Registration process for this year's admissions at the Delhi University (DU) ended on June 22, Saturday. As per the data provided by the university, more than 3.6 lakh students registered for various courses at the university via the online portal. However, only one transgender student's application was received for the admission at the university this year. Here are the details.
People of third gender later disclose their identity: Professor
The transgender candidate has applied at the university under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. Commenting on the same, Professor Rajesh from DU's Transgender Resource Center, said that several transgender students opt for distance courses due to "no inclusive atmosphere". "(Sometimes) people of third gender enrol themselves as either male or female, and then later disclose their real identity," he further added.
Separate cut-off list will be released for EWS candidates
Apart from the transgender candidate, 5,528 male candidates, and 3,562 female candidates have also applied for admissions under the newly-introduced EWS category. Earlier, the university had announced an increase of 10% seats for the students under the EWS category. Now, the total number of seats available for undergraduate aspirants has gone up to 62,000. Notably, separate cut-offs will be released for EWS category.
More female candidates than male registered this year, states data
After the registration process was completed, the university released a detailed data of the same for each category. The data showed that this year, DU recorded more registrations from female candidates than males. Also, a total of 2.58 lakh students, out of 3.6 lakh, have completed the payment for the registration. This, however, has seen a drop by almost 20,000, as compared to 2018.
DU official explains why registration numbers have shown a decline
Rajeev Gupta, head of the Admission Committee, explained, "Till last year, there was no option of making corrections in the registration form because of which there were multiple registrations by the same person. We introduced the option this time. Hence the fall in numbers."
Here are the category-wise registration details for 2019-20
As per the data, the number of female and male registrations per category were recorded as follows: Unreserved Category: 84,021 female candidates and 68,457 male candidates Scheduled Tribe Category: 3,056 female candidates and 4,044 male candidates. Scheduled Caste Category: Over 16,000 female and over 17,000 male candidates. Other Backward Class- Non-creamy: 22,531 female candidates and 32,926 male candidates.
Football and NCC popular among Sports and ECA categories respectively
Apart from this, several students applied under the Sports and Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) categories. While most of the students who are seeking admissions via Sports quota opted for football, other popular sports included athletics, basketball, cricket and volleyball. Meanwhile, the most popular categories under ECA were NCC, Debate (English), quiz, fine arts and theater. There are over 14 disciplines under ECA quota this year.
HC extended the registration process over eligibility criteria
Meanwhile, the first cut-off list for 2019-20 admissions will be released on June 28. Earlier, the university had closed the registration process on June 16 and the list was expected to come out on June 20. However, the registration portal was re-opened till June 22 after the Delhi High Court instructed DU to let students apply as per the 2018-19 eligibility criteria.
