DU considers limited cut-off lists, online aptitude tests for candidates
The Delhi University (DU) is mulling cutting down the number of cutoff lists for undergraduate admissions to five. Last year, as many as 11 lists were released. In 2018, it might start centralized counseling of students to fill up the seats remaining vacant after five lists. But that's not all. DU is also considering aptitude tests for certain subjects this time.
Why the proposal to cut down the number of lists?
"Too many cutoff lists lead to admission process continuing even after classes start," an admission committee member explained. To tackle this problem, officials are considering only five lists. After that, colleges would be asked to submit the number of seats remaining vacant in each course. Students who have already registered will then undergo counseling, much like that in engineering colleges.
How will the counseling happen?
Based on students' Class 12 marks, their preference and number of seats left, they will be allotted to various colleges. "The exact guidelines are yet to be framed," another member said. A formal recommendation would be submitted to the vice-chancellor after the next committee meeting.
Why is the DU considering aptitude tests?
Apart from that, the university is considering holding online aptitude tests for Mathematics, Economics, English and Computer Science. It will be in multiple choice questions (MCQ) format with 75% subject-related questions and 25% from language, reasoning and aptitude. "This will eliminate students with no aptitude for the subject and will make the cutoff more realistic," a member said.
