Taxi drivers follow rules, expensive cars' drivers don't: Tourism Minister
Tourism Minister K J Alphons has said the most unruly drivers on Indian roads are the ones who own expensive cars. As he inaugurated a two-day programme to promote national tourism, Alphons said while teaching traffic rules to taxi drivers is important, it is also essential to give lessons of the same to those driving high-end cars on streets. More details here.
Tourism Minister comes down heavily at unruly drivers
He said, "We think once we have a swanky car, we have the right to run over people sleeping on footpaths. There are lawyers who will manipulate facts, bring a poor guy who will say he was driving as seen in many famous cases" (sic)
Change needs to start at 'big level', said Alphons
Alphons questioned the logic of giving security to ministers apart from PM, President, and Home Minister. He said, "Who wants to kill the poor tourism minister of the country? A lot of this is a sense of self-importance." He further added safer roads will give tourism a boost and said, "Safer roads can help double our tourists in next three years." (sic)
How does Alphons plan to make India 'tourist-friendly'?
The minister introduced a 'Tourist Felicitation guide' to serve as a 'code of practice for Taxi operators in India'. He said it is essential for Indians to have hospitality in their DNA, just like Thailand to give the necessary boost to the sector.
