Doctor rape-murder: Kolkata college students protest Dr Ghosh's appointment
Students at Calcutta National Medical College have protested against the appointment of Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, as their new principal. Dr Ghosh had recently resigned from his previous position following a doctor's rape and murder case that sparked nationwide outrage. Despite his resignation, he was appointed principal of another prominent medical college within 24 hours, leading to strong criticism from protesters demanding justice in the case.
Students refuse to accept Dr Ghosh's appointment
Upon learning of Dr Ghosh's appointment, students at Calcutta National Medical College announced their refusal to allow him to assume his new role. They described the decision to reinstate Dr Ghosh as highly unethical and chanted "go back" slogans. Notably, West Bengal Minister Javed Ahmed Khan and Trinamool Congress MLA Swarna Kamal visited the campus to address the students' concerns, but were met with protests.
State government, HC respond to protests
In response to the protests, the state government requested Dr Ajay Kumar Ray to continue as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The Calcutta High Court also questioned the state's decision to appoint Dr Ghosh, stating "No man is above the law...How did he step down...then...rewarded with another responsibility?" The HC has ordered Dr Ghosh to take a long leave in light of his controversial comments that were perceived as victim-blaming and his failure to ensure staff safety.
Doctor's rape and murder sparks nationwide protests
The rape-murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College has sparked nationwide protests. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association and the Indian Medical Association have urged Union Health Minister JP Nadda to take immediate action for doctors' safety. The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal government to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who regularly visited the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
