Despite clearing physical criteria, disabled woman declared ineligible for government-job
A West Delhi resident, who has a locomotor disability of 65%, has approached Delhi State Disability Commission after she wasn't allowed to apply for the post of a government teacher. The woman has alleged that she cleared the physical criteria. In her complaint, she said when she applied for the vacancy last year, online, she was told she wasn't eligible.
Woman says giving false details would've disqualified her altogether
First, the woman filed the form under 'Disable category' for both arms and legs with minor defects. But the website told she was not eligible to apply. She then approached the Delhi Subordinate Service Selection Board and was told to apply in one arm and leg category. "I didn't find it convincing. Mentioning of any incorrect information could disqualify my form," she said.
Those having minor defects are treated unfairly, woman alleges
In this case, the bone of contention is that the categories aren't exhaustive. The woman in her complaint alleged the ministry chose to treat those having minor defects in hands, legs and limbs, similar to those having major disabilities. Now, the Directorate of Education has been asked to explain about it by State Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities. A show-cause notice was issued.
No government jobs for those having minor defects, complainant says
"The ministry of social justice and empowerment has not identified any posts for persons with both arms and legs or all four limbs affected," the complaint said. The matter was listed for hearing. Those having disability above 40% can apply for government jobs, experts said.
At three, severe illness affected woman's hands and legs
After the woman fell severely ill, when she was just three years old, her arms and legs showed signs of disability. While the doctors claimed she wouldn't be able to walk, she proved them wrong with determination. She began exercising. "Today, I can do all the work by myself including driving the car and I do not need anyone's help," she said.
