DU Admissions: Uniform 1% cut-off relaxation for female students
Delhi University (DU) will provide a uniform relaxation of 1% in the cut-off to all female students seeking admission from this academic year. As per reports, approximately 26 co-ed colleges affiliated under the university will be following the uniform relaxation criteria. Earlier, this relaxation for the female candidates differed from college to college and varied from 1% to 4%. Here are more details.
Committee wanted to have a uniform policy: DU official
According to DU's admission committee's chairperson, Rajeev Gupta, "The committee wanted to have a uniform policy in all aspects of the admission process. It was then decided to fix the relaxation to be given to the women candidates." Further, another member of the committee told the Hindustan Times that several college officials have been demanding the same for the last three years.
Female candidates already have edge over male candidates: Committee member
According to a committee member, several colleges argued that there are various women colleges under DU, which proves that female students "already have an edge over" male students. In addition, high relaxation in cut-off will give them more advantage over their male counterparts, they argued.
Uniformity in a way is good: College principal
Manoj Sinha, who is the principal of Aryabhatta College and had been a member of the admission committee, supported the decision and said, "Uniformity in a way is good." "Otherwise what happens is that each college provides different relaxations in each subject and the candidates get confused," he added. He further said that uniformity will make the process easier for both candidates and colleges.
Female aspirants are disappointed with the university's move
While the college officials are happy with the decision, many female aspirants, who were looking forward to a higher relaxation, are disappointed. Separately, Tanvir Aeijaiz, who is a Political Science faculty at Ramjas College, said the relaxation can be more flexible for the colleges situated in far-flung areas. According to Tanvir, the sex-ratio in these isolated colleges is imbalanced.
DU's first cut-off list expected on June 20
Meanwhile, Ramjas College, Sri Venkateswara College, Aryabhatta College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Dyal Singh College, Keshav Mahavidyalaya and Motilal Nehru College are among the 26 colleges to follow the uniform relaxation criteria.
