What's the story
In a horrific incident, a 19-year-old engineering student who hated studies as well as his family for constantly badgering him, stabbed his parents and his teenage sister to death at their apartment in south Delhi.
The murders took place in the early hours of Wednesday, and the student, who hated his father the most, tried to pass them off as his handiwork.
Here's more.
Profile
The student, Sarnam Varma, came from a well-to-do family
The student, Sarnam Verma, alias Suraj, is a first year civil engineering student at a college in Gurugram.
From a well-to-do family, Sarnam lived with his parents, Mithlesh and Siya, and his 16-year-old sister.
Mithlesh was an interior designer contractor who owned a four-storey building in Delhi's Kishangarh. Having rented out other flats in the building, they lived in its first-floor apartment.
Murders
Suraj stabbed his family while they slept
Enraged by their constant badgering about his "wayward' lifestyle, which involved shunning studies for watching movies and other activities, Sarnam, on Tuesday bought a knife and a pair of scissors.
Then, around 3am on Wednesday, he proceeded to stab his sister and his parents multiple times while they slept, suffering minor injuries in the process.
However, he was discovered soon after.
Discovery
How the murders came to light
Owing to the injuries he'd received, Sarnam had hoped to pass the killings off as a failed robbery.
At around 5am on Wednesday, when a couple in the neighborhood were returning from a hospital, Sarnam cried out for help, hoping to pin the murders on non-existent robbers.
Subsequently, the police arrived and Sarnam and his kin were soon rushed to the hospital.
Questioning
Attempts to pin the murders on robbers didn't match evidence
Sarnam's family was declared brought dead to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Sarnam, while responding to police's queries said initially said that two men had attack and killed his family for trying to resist a robbery, and that his mother had died trying to save him.
However, since nothing had been taken from the house, evidence didn't add up, prompting the police to question him further.
Confession
Sarnam finally broke down and confessed
During the subsequent rounds of question, Sarnam first claimed that his father had brutally murdered his mother and sister, prompting Sarnam to murder him.
However, he eventually broke down and confessed that he had murdered them all in their sleep.
Sarnam said he hated his father for beating him, his mother for being strict, and his sister for secretly spying on him.
