Delhi's Indira Gandhi International is world's 10th busiest airport
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi was the tenth busiest airport in the world last year, the Airports Council International (ACI) said on Tuesday. America's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport remained the busiest airport. Notably, the ACI also revealed that air travel is almost back to its pre-pandemic levels, with a recovery rate of 93.8% from 2019. In 2023, the global passenger count hit an impressive 8.5 billion, indicating a significant growth of 27.2% compared to the previous year.
US airport tops list; Dubai, London follow
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport emerged as the world's busiest airport in 2023, serving over 104.6 million passengers. Following closely were Dubai International Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, securing second and third positions respectively with passenger volumes exceeding 86.9 million and 81.7 million. Other airports making it to the top ten list included London's Heathrow, Tokyo's Haneda, Denver International, Istanbul Airport, Los Angeles International, and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
IGI served more than 72.2 million passengers in 2023
Despite a slight drop from ninth to tenth place, IGI continued to serve more than 72.2 million passengers in 2023. The airport serves as the main international gateway to India's capital, having Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Interestingly, Delhi Airport is also ranked amongst the most beautiful airports in the world. Moreover, IGI is also the first carbon-neutral airport in the Asia Pacific Region, accredited by the ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation Program.
Hong Kong Airport is most popular amongst cargo planes
Besides, passengers, cargo continues to play a key role in world commerce despite the year-over-year decrease. The ACI data revealed that Hong Kong International Airport has maintained the top position, followed by Memphis International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Doha International Airport rejoined the top 10 list in 2023, jumping to number 8 with a growth of 6.3% over 2019.
