Delhi's IGI 16th busiest airport in world, JFK exits list
New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) was the 16th busiest airport globally in 2017, according to a report of Airports Council International (ACI). In 2016, IGI was at the 22nd position and the jump proves it's one of the fastest growing airports in terms of passenger traffic. A record 63.45 million commuted from IGI (a 14.1% growth), said an ACI release.
103 million passengers make Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta world's busiest airport
A record 103 million passengers either arrived or departed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport making it the busiest airport. However, it saw a decline of 0.3% from 2016. Surprisingly, New York's JFK Airport wasn't on the list of 20 busiest airports.
Indian airports are growing at a rapid rate
The trade association ACI encourages healthy relationship among its 641 members operating from 1,953 airports across 176 countries. ACI's World Airport Traffic Forecasts suggest by 2020 India will represent the third largest aviation market. GMR-group-run IGI topped Airports Service Quality list. The good news is Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai also witnessed 26.9%, 19.6%, 12.9%, and 10.5% year-over-year growth respectively.
Bengal Tiger is awake, says ACI in statement
"With an astounding population base of over 1.3 billion inhabitants, the move towards a more liberalised aviation market coupled with stronger economic fundamentals has helped to awaken the Bengal tiger to become one of the fastest growing markets in the world," the ACI said.
