Delhi: RTOs overwhelmed by people wanting to scrap old vehicles
With the transport department actively involved in the de-registration and scrapping of 15-year-old diesel vehicles, Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) are getting overwhelmed by inquiries by residents regarding the scrapping procedure. The development comes after the transport department this week started surveying areas in south Delhi to find de-registered vehicles. Here are the details.
An RTO official explains the situation
"A large number of people are visiting RTOs to inquire about the procedure to de-register an old vehicle. We're also getting requests from vehicle owners who want to voluntarily get their old diesel or petrol vehicle de-registered," said an official at Delhi's Sheik Sarai RTO.
The transport department is targeting 15-year-old diesel vehicles
For those unaware, under current regulations to check pollution, the transport department does not allow diesel vehicles older than 10 years, and petrol vehicles older than 15 years to be driven on city roads. Currently, however, the department is targeting diesel vehicles aged 15 years or more to be de-registered and scrapped. So far, more than two lakh such vehicles have been de-registered.
What you need to do to de-register vehicles
The procedure for de-registering a vehicle requires the applicant to write a letter to the Motor Licensing Officer of the respective RTO. The letter should be accompanied by the original vehicle registration certificate, a cut-out of the vehicle's chassis, and a letter from a scrapper confirming that the vehicle has been scrapped. For retaining registration numbers, a separate application has to be filed.
