Over 8,000 Delhi Police posts lie vacant as crime soars
With incidence of crime soaring in the national capital, the Delhi Police are struggling to cope with the crisis as it faces an acute shortage of staff. A Praja Foundation study revealed that there is a 10% gap in the number of sanctioned and working police personnel. With over 8,000 posts remaining vacant, the Delhi Police find themselves understaffed to deal with the crisis.
Study reveals deficit between sanctioned and working police personnel
The Delhi Police has a sanctioned strength of 84,685 police personnel, of which 8,091 positions currently lie vacant. Crime incidence has soared in Delhi's Outer district which has a gap of 18% between sanctioned and working personnel. There's also an overall 58% deficit in additional commissioners, a 33% deficit in deputy commissioners, a 24% deficit in assistant commissioners, and a 26% deficit in sub-inspectors.
Delhi Police employs less than 4% from minority communities
Last year, the Delhi Police decided to promote 25,827 personnel ranked between constables and sub-inspectors. While the move saw head constables being promoted to sub-inspectors, there still remains a 26% deficit in sub-inspector posts while a 10% shortage persists among police constables. Furthermore, as far as minority representation is concerned, the Delhi Police employs less than 4% of members from minority communities.
