Delhi on high alert after inputs of possible terror attack
Delhi has been placed on high alert by security agencies after a tip-off from the Uttar Pradesh Police about possible terror strikes, ANI reported on Wednesday. It said an anonymous email apparently from the terrorist organization Tehrik-e-Taliban (India cell) was received by several persons, who then informed the UP Police. The UP Police later submitted the details of the email to the Delhi Police.
Why does this story matter?
A similar alert was issued by the Delhi Police before Republic Day after it received inputs from intelligence agencies about a possible terror attack. Officials have also increased patrolling in areas bordering Uttar Pradesh as two IEDs were recovered from Ghazipur and Seemapuri earlier this year. Recently, the capital city was put on alert during Holi and Shab-e-Baraat celebrations.
Sarojini market closed following the threat
The Delhi Police on Tuesday conducted preventive searches in the Sarojni Nagar market of New Delhi. The president of the Mini Market Traders Association, Ashok Randhawa said that markets will be closed due to some security threat. However, the Delhi Police denied issuing any orders of closing the market, clarifying that they only carried out preventive searches.
IED threat around Republic day
A critical security warning was issued before Republic Day after an improvised explosive device (IED) was found from the Ghazipur Flower Market in January 2022. The National Security Guard (NSG) unit stationed at the Central Vista was dispatched to the scene following the first inspection. The NSG's Bomb Disposal Squad had detonated the IED using a controlled blast that abated the threat.
Recent bomb scare in Delhi
In mid-February, a suspicious bag laden with IED was recovered from Delhi's Old Seemapuri area, which intelligence suspect could be linked to the Ghazipur case. The bomb, weighing 2.5-3 kg was found inside a house at D-49 of Old Seemapuri and later defused by officials. Arrests have been made in the case.
