Delhi-NCR prepares for light rain, strong winds this week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain and strong winds in the Delhi-NCR region this week, providing a respite from the summer heat. Senior scientist Naresh Kumar from IMD Delhi stated, "In Delhi, we expect temperatures to stay around 38 degrees Celsius for the next 2-3 days, then go up slightly." He also mentioned a possibility of light rain in the near future.

Temperature trends and wind speeds in Delhi-NCR
Monday's maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 24 degrees Celsius. Kumar also mentioned that gusty winds ranging from 25-35km/h are anticipated. Following this period, a gradual rise by 1-2 degrees in the city's temperature is expected. In contrast, certain regions of Eastern India are already witnessing temperatures as high as 44 degrees Celsius.

Kumar further stated, "Over the next four-five days, temperatures in Eastern India could reach 44 degrees Celsius, while Northwest India is not expected to exceed 40 or 41 degrees Celsius." The IMD has issued severe heatwave alerts for several states. West Bengal is under a red alert due to significantly higher than normal temperatures. Meanwhile, Odisha has received an orange alert and Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have been issued yellow alerts for the upcoming five days.

Heatwave conditions and adjusted school timings
Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal are currently experiencing heatwave conditions. In response to the ongoing heatwave, the Odisha government has announced school vacations. Schools will operate from 6:30am to 10:30am from April 22 to April 24, before commencing summer vacation from April 25. The district administration in Patna, Bihar has also adjusted school timings due to the heatwave.
