#CitizenshipAct protests in Delhi turn violent; buses set on fire
As protests against the newly-enacted Citizenship Act entered the third day in the national capital, a protest march in South Delhi organized by students of Jamia Millia Islamia turned violent on Sunday evening. Several buses and over a hundred two-wheelers were set on fire in New Friends Colony, creating unrest in the area, following which police used batons and teargas to disperse the protestors.
50-100 students of Jamia detained after the violence
The police have detained 50-100 students of Jamia after the incident. However, the detainees had distanced themselves from the violence, said reports. Meanwhile, some senior Delhi Police officers reportedly admitted privately that it was some local thugs who had set vehicles on fire and pelted stones at the police forces as they tried to stop them from marching toward Jantar Mantar.
Two fire department officials injured in stone-pelting
According to reports, four buses and more than a hundred two-wheeler vehicles were set ablaze by a large number of protestors. Meanwhile, two fire department officials and a photographer were injured in the stone-pelting that took place during the clash between protestors and cops.
Traffic snarls in South Delhi; Metro services also affected
Due to the violent protests, several areas in South Delhi - from Ashram to New Friends Colony to Kalindi Kunj - experienced massive traffic snarls. The Delhi Police also tweeted that traffic movement from Okhla Underpass to Sarita Vihar was suspended because of the demonstration. Metro services on the Magenta Line - on which Jamia Millia Islamia University falls - were also disrupted.
CM Kejriwal urges Lieutenant-General Baijal to restore normalcy in Delhi
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that he has spoken to Lieutenant-General Anil Baijal regarding the violence and urged him to restore normalcy and peace in the national capital. In the tweet, he also said that the government is doing "everything possible at our end" to address the situation. He added that "real miscreants who caused violence should be identified and punished."
