Heavy overnight rain triggers waterlogging, traffic congestion in Delhi
Delhi woke up to severe waterlogging and traffic congestion on Thursday, following a night of heavy rainfall. Waterlogging was reported in areas such as Sarita Vihar, Qutub Minar Metro Station, Saket, Mukarba Chowk, Azadpur, Mahipalpur, and Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The GGR Underpass and Ring Road section under the Dhaula Kuan flyover were also flooded along the crucial airport route. The entire portion of Rohtak Road between Nangloi and Tikri Border was also flooded.
Safdarjung recorded 77.1mm rainfall
Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded 77.1mm of rainfall in 24 hours until 8:30am. Most of the rain (63mm) was recorded between 2:30 and 5:30am. Lodhi Road received 92.2mm of rain until 8:30am, Ridge 18.2 mm, Palam 54.5 mm and Ayanagar 62.4 mm. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) criteria, 2.5-15.5 mm of rain is considered light rainfall, 15.6 mm-64.4 mm moderate, 64.5-115.5 mm heavy, 115.6-204.4 mm very heavy, and more than 204.5 mm extremely heavy rainfall.
Delhi Traffic Police issues advisories
Due to waterlogging and traffic congestion, the Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories directing people to avoid GT Karnal Road (from Mukarba Chowk to Azadpur Chowk) and Mehrauli Badarpur Road (from Khanpur to the shooting range T-point). Other areas are Rohtak Road near APS Colony under GGR flyover towards Vasant Vihar and Dhaula Kuan, GGR-PDR underpass, Dhaula Kuan flyover, Outer Ring Road (from Bhera roundabout towards Peeragarhi), and underneath the railway bridge at Pul Prahladpur.
