Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid gets interim bail till October 2
Sheikh Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, a Member of Parliament from Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla constituency, has been granted interim bail by Delhi's Patiala House Court. The bail, effective until October 2, is in relation to a terror funding case. This development allows Rashid to participate in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections campaign.
Rashid jailed since 2019
Rashid has been held in Delhi's Tihar Jail since 2019 following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2017. The arrest was made under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, linked to a 2017 terror-funding case. His name emerged during an investigation involving Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested for allegedly funding terror groups and separatists in Kashmir.
Rashid's political journey
Rashid sought interim bail to campaign in the upcoming Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections, scheduled for September 18, 25, and October 1. Earlier this year, he defeated former Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. Rashid leads the Awami Ittehad Party but contested these elections as an independent candidate.
