'Happy' young Delhi couple kills themselves in apparent suicide pact
A young married couple in Delhi allegedly hung themselves inside their house in Govindpuri after informing their family of a 'suicide pact.' The woman, identified as 28-year-old Arpita Bagga, had messaged her in-laws about their plans, but they saw the message hours later. However, she didn't mention the reason behind the apparent suicide. Police are now awaiting autopsy reports to rule out murder.
The man was from Delhi, the woman from Banaras
Arpita and her husband Mohit Bagga, 30, had a love marriage two years ago. Their parents had consented. Mohit had spent the last year in New Zealand pursuing a course, and was working with a sports events company in Delhi the last three months. Arpita was a homemaker. Mohit's South Delhi-based family deals in jewelry, while Arpita's stay in Banaras. They had no children.
His body was found hanging, hers was on the floor
Mohit's mother received a message from Arpita's phone at around 4:45am yesterday, but she saw it much later. She immediately contacted police as well as a relative that stayed near the couple's house. "The door of the flat was broken by Mohit's relative in front of the PCR staff," said DCP Chinmoy Biswal. Inside, Arpita's body was on the floor and Mohit's was hanging from the fan.
'They were happy and financially stable,' say shocked families
Police found ligature marks around Arpita's neck and a dupatta near her body, and suspect she had hung herself but "her body must have fallen." As they were married for less than seven years, a sub-divisional magistrate would probe the case. But their families are shocked; Mohit and Arpita were financially stable and living a "happy life," they said.
