Air India-SATS employee arrested for smuggling gold at Delhi airport
Two people, including an employee of Air India SATS (AISATS), have been arrested by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth roughly Rs. 17L at Delhi airport, an official statement said today. While a passenger was intercepted on his arrival from Bangkok on Friday, "one staff working for Air India-SATS was also intercepted, for assisting the said passenger in smuggling," it stated.
Two gold rods, having value Rs. 17.18L, were recovered
A detailed personal baggage search of the passenger and airport staff resulted in the recovery of two gold rods crudely given the shape of kada (bangle), total weighing 600g and having a total value of Rs. 17.18L, the customs department said. The passenger also admitted that he was involved in smuggling of gold total weighing 300g on previous occasions at Ahmedabad airport, it said.
AISATS staff admitted that he previously helped others in smuggling
"The Air India SATS staff has also admitted that he previously assisted some other passengers in smuggling of gold at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi," the customs department said. The passenger and AISATS staff have been arrested, the statement said.
