Delhi Police rescues four malnourished, tortured horses used for weddings
The Delhi police rescued four malnourished horses, which are used for weddings, recently from different areas, after PETA India lodged a complaint. The animal welfare organization had asked police for help in cracking down on rampant cruelty meted out to the four-legged creatures. PETA had alleged the horses used for weddings are kept in filthy conditions, tied with ropes and not fed properly.
Horses collapse due to dehydration, get sick regularly
PETA India, in its complaint to Delhi Police, said the horses are made to stand for long hours on concrete floors, that leads to them developing conditions like arthritis, thrush (an infection), and laminitis (a painful inflammation of the sensitive inner foot). Inadequate care forces them to collapse from dehydration. Horns are also used on horses despite the law being against it.
'Even brides and grooms get shocked on learning horse's condition'
PETA India alleged the horse's lips and tongues are ripped sometimes, which causes extreme pain. It also results in psychological trauma and ends up damaging the animal for life. PETA India CEO Dr Manilal Valliyate said sometimes even the bride and groom are shocked to learn the horse's condition. He added "spiked bits" are used to keep animals still during chaotic noises at weddings.
The deplorable conditions of rescued horses will hurt you too
Further, Dr Valliyate asserted the condition of four rescued horses proved why couples needed to stop using horses at weddings. One horse, rescued from Maharaja Surajmal Stadium, had large wounds on the body and legs. The one found in Sanjay Market, Nand Nagri, wasn't able to bear her body weight. Two mares were rescued from Nangloi, one of whom didn't have left-eye vision.
PETA India also writes to e-commerce giant Amazon
PETA India has now written to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change asking them to amend laws to stop such cruelty. They also wrote to Amazon India seeking the removal of items used to hurt horses from the shopping website.
