Cyclone Mora to turn severe over Bay of Bengal

What's the story

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that cyclone Mora, that has formed over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to turn severe within the next 24 hours. The IMD said that the system is moving north, north-east at a speed of 14 kmph and is currently in east-central Bay of Bengal. The IMD said the storm may cross Bangladesh on May 30.

"Based on present conditions we can say that the cyclone storm is likely to transform into a severe cyclonic storm and pass closer to the eastern coast of Bangladesh, near Chittagong. It will not make landfall in India."

Warnings

Warnings issued to coastal regions

The IMD has issued warnings to fishermen in Kolkata to not venture out into the open sea as wind conditions were dangerous. They added that Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The IMD also said that weather conditions around Andaman Island are also likely to be bad.
