Accused in BHU student's murder-case arrested after encounter with police
A wanted criminal, who was on the run after allegedly killing Banaras Hindu University student Gaurav Singh, has been arrested following an exchange of fire with police. Acting on a tip-off, the police had cordoned the Lanka area in Varanasi yesterday night. The notorious criminal, Rupesh Verma, was arrested while he was trying to flee the spot by opening fire at the police team.
A sub-inspector also got injured in the gun fight
The accused, also known as Sunny or Professor, is a native of Buxar, Bihar, and was nabbed when he tried to flee by opening fire at the police team, Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni said. A sub-inspector was injured in the exchange of fire with the gangster. Verma, who was carrying a reward of Rs. 25,000, also received bullet injuries in the leg.
Verma's companion, Dubey, gave a slip to the police
After getting shot in the leg, Verma fell off the motorcycle which he had looted a few days ago from a man on the National Highway, Kulkarni added. One of his companions, Raja Dubey alias Ravan, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, gave a slip to the police. Both Verma and Dubey were wanted in the murder case of Gaurav.
Both Verma and the sub-inspector were admitted to hospitals: Police
Verma was admitted to a government-hospital in Ramnagar, while sub-inspector Ishwar Dayal, who received bullet injuries in his hands, was admitted to BHU's Trauma Center, where his health condition was stated to be stable, said police. A hunt is on to nab Dubey, they added.
