Total lockdown in Chennai from June 19; details here
The Tamil Nadu government has decided to impose a complete lockdown in Chennai and parts of neighboring districts from June 19-30. The decision comes amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in Chennai, which is the worst-hit region in the state. Out of the over 44,000 total cases in Tamil Nadu, 70% have been reported from Chennai alone. 'Maximized restricted lockdown' from June 19
According to ANI, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced "maximized restricted lockdown" in Chennai. The restrictions will continue from June 19-30 in the districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur, that fall under the Metropolitan Chennai Police limits. The announcement comes after recommendations by public health and medical experts and a Monday afternoon discussion in a Cabinet meeting.
4 districts worst-hit in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has reported 44,661 cases—the second-highest in India—while the death toll is 435. Chennai is the worst-hit district with 31,896 cases and 347 deaths. Chennai is followed by Chengalpattu (2,882 cases; 24 deaths), Tiruvallur (1,865 cases; 22 deaths), and Kancheepuram (709 cases; seven deaths). Together, the four districts account for 83% of Tamil Nadu's total cases and 92% of total deaths.
Cases spike in Tamil Nadu
Over the past few days, the Chennai district alone has reported roughly 1,400 fresh cases every day. Daily new cases across Tamil Nadu have also approached 1,900 in recent days. In June alone, the state has reported around 20,000 cases and 250 deaths.
No relaxations on June 21 and June 28
According to The Hindu, essential services will be allowed to function during this period. Mobile units selling vegetables and fruits will also function. Provision/grocery stores and petrol bunks can function between 6 am-2 pm with physical distancing. On two Sundays during the period—June 21 and 28—no relaxations will be offered and only milk supply and access to medical facilities will be available.
Necessary documents required for leaving Chennai for weddings, funerals, etc.
The Hindu quoted Palaniswami as saying, "Only those who produce necessary documents for leaving Chennai for other districts for weddings, medical treatment, funerals would be granted necessary e-passes." The existing arrangement will apply to trains/flights arriving from other states and ships/flights arriving from other countries.
'Banks allowed with 33% staff on June 29, 30 only'
Palaniswami reportedly said, "The general public is advised to buy essential supplies without using vehicles and from stores located within 2 km from their residences." He said, "Banks with 33% staff would be allowed to operate on June 29 and 30 alone. ATMs and related banking services and transport would function as usual," adding that Public Distribution Shops can function between 8 am-2 pm.
What else is allowed during the period?
Although autorickshaw, taxi, and private vehicles will not be allowed, rental, autorickshaws, taxis, and private vehicles will be allowed for essential medical requirements. Restaurants/eateries can operate for takeaway services only. Food delivery services are allowed to operate. Amma Canteens and community kitchens run by local bodies for the poor can also function. Construction activities are allowed if workers are available on site.
