India on Monday reported less than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases, a decline of around 1,000 cases from the previous day. The active caseload in the country currently stands at 54,118, which accounts for 0.13% of the total cases. In the past 24 hours, 4,362 new cases and 66 fatalities were reported. Meanwhile, India's COVID-19 recovery rate has reached 98.68%.
Why does this story matter?
India on Monday recorded fewer cases than the day before. Both active caseload and the weekly positivity rate are also witnessing a steady decline. Notably, India's daily tally dropped below the 5,000-mark on Monday for the first time in 660 days. The spike in cases in the last few months—dubbed India's third wave—has been attributed to the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The country crossed the one-crore mark on December 19, 2020, and the two-crore mark on May 4, 2021.
