Coronavirus: India reports record high with 3.49 lakh new cases
India on Sunday reported 3.49 lakh new coronavirus infections, marking the biggest single-day spike for the fifth consecutive day. The nationwide tally has now climbed to 1.69 crore. Meanwhile, over 2,700 more patients died in the past 24 hours—the deadliest day—bringing the death toll to 1,92,311. The daily positivity reached this week's high of 20.3% with 17,19,588 samples being tested on the day.
India reports 1,69,60,172 cases, 1,92,311 deaths
According to the Union Health Ministry, till Sunday morning, India reported a total of 1,69,60,172 COVID-19 cases. The death toll has reached 1,92,311. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,40,85,110 patients have recovered, while 26,82,751 cases involve active infections. In the past 24 hours alone, India recorded 3,49,691 new infections and 2,767 fresh fatalities. 14,09,16,417 vaccine doses have been administered so far.
Maharashtra reports 67K new cases
67,160 more people tested positive in Maharashtra with a daily positivity rate of 23.4%. The tally has now climbed to 42,28,836, which includes 6,94,480 active cases. 676 more deaths also pushed the death toll to 12,726. Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik announced on Sunday that the state will vaccinate all citizens for free. Starting Saturday, all people above age 18 can be vaccinated in India.
26.6K new cases in Kerala
Kerala saw a marginal dip in infections, reporting 26,685 new cases, however, the daily positivity rate remained a high 20.3%. The death toll stood at 5,080 with 25 more deaths. The cumulative number of cases has reached 13,77,186, with 1,98,576 active cases. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked private hospitals to set aside 25% beds exclusively for COVID-19 care.
Record 29.4K new cases in Karnataka
With 29,438 new cases, Karnataka reported its biggest spike for the fifth consecutive day. The daily positivity rate stood at 15.5%. The total number of infections has reached 13,04,397, including 2,34,483 active cases. 208 fatalities pushed the death toll to 14,283. Notably, Bengaluru city—which has a night curfew and weekend lockdown—has twice as many active cases (1,62,171) than Mumbai and Delhi—both cities under lockdown.
Tamil Nadu sees biggest spike for 11th consecutive day
With 14,842 new cases, Tamil Nadu recorded the biggest single-day spike for the eleventh consecutive day. The total caseload has reached 10,66,329, which includes 1,00,668 active cases. 80 more fatalities pushed the state's death toll to 13,475.
UP reports record 38K new cases
Uttar Pradesh reported 38,055 new cases, marking the biggest single-day spike for the fourth consecutive day. The daily positivity rate was a high 16.8%. The total caseload in the state is 10,51,314. Currently, the number of active cases in the state stands at 2,88,144. The state also saw 222 fresh fatalities that pushed the death toll due to the disease to 10,959.
Andhra records biggest spike since early-September
Andhra Pradesh reported 11,698 fresh cases, a day after reporting a record spike of 11,766 new cases. The daily positivity rate stood at 22.9%. The cumulative number of cases has reached 10,20,926, out of which, 81,471 cases involve active infections. 37 more deaths took the state's death toll to 7,616. The state imposed a night curfew to curb the spread of COVID-19 starting Saturday.
Delhi records deadliest day
Delhi recorded 24,013 new cases, marking a high daily positivity rate of 32.27%, i.e., one out of three samples tested was found positive. 357 more deaths, the highest ever, also brought the death toll to 13,898. The cumulative number of cases has now climbed to 10,04,782, which includes 93,080 active cases. Delhi has extended the ongoing lockdown till May 3.
